Intimacy with God - Part 2

Purpose of the Bible
By Bro.Thomas Chakkalackal PMP, MSc, M.S

All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:    17That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works - 2 Timothy 2:16-17

I am going to throw a bomb in your mind with this question - Bible and the Word of God, are they same? No. I know I am taking a risk by asking this question, but stay with me until I explain why I said "No". Sometimes to reveal certain pivotol truths, we have to take some risks to challenge the traditional mindset. Just because we have heard a statement a million times in the church, it cannot be true, unless it agree with the Word of God.

I believe the Holy Bible is an historical book that reveals HIS[Jesus]-STORY, written by almost fourty writers when they were inspired by the Holy spirit. [Don't  misunderstand me by taking the literal meaning of "History" from the dictionary, what I meant by historical book is that which reveals HIS-STORY] . This is not the history of the whole world, it is the history about  Adam's fall and the blood line of the redeemer Jesus. From the geneolgies mentioned in Mathew 1& Luke 3, we can understand that the Bible is a historical book (HIS-STORY), which reveals only the blood line between first Adam to last Adam (Jesus), and the events associated with the disobedience of Adam and obedience of Jesus. Although it has prophecy's, psalms, proverbs etc, the central theme is man's redemption through Jesus. From Genesis to Revelation we can see the redemptive blood line as the pivotal truth in the Bible.

The patriarchs such as Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Moses, David, Joshua, Joseph, Solomon, Boaz, Rahab and many others are in the Bible because they happend to be in the blood line of Jesus. Many non-christians have this question in their mind,  "Why Bible mentions only about the Jewish race and the incidents associated with them?  The only answer is, it is because of they are in the blood line of Jesus. The importance is to the person Jesus, not the jewish race.

All the characters and incidents in the Old Testament are a type or shadow of our Savior Jesus and His perfect work on the cross. The history, psalms  and prophecy's became scriptures when it was inspired by the Holy spirit. Through these 66 books, God reveals the Word of God [Jesus]. Therefore, it is accurate to say that the "Bible has the Word of God" and it is buried in the scriptures. Holy Spirit inspired the men of God to accurately record the scriptures, so that He can reveal Jesus through it.

The Word of God is what is revealed by the Holy Spirit from the scriptures. The scriptures which are not rightly interpreted are not the Word of God.  All the scriptures are pointing to the Living Word (John 5:39), when we approach Jesus the Living Word through the scriptures, the living Word (Jesus) will open up the scriptures and reveal the written Word. Holy Spirit guide us and lead us to the Living Word, then the Living Word who is Jesus will open up the scriptures (Luke 24:32).

 OR

Holy Spirit through the scriptures lead us to Christ, then Jesus will open up the scriptures to us.

John 1:1
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

John 1:14
And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.

Though the Holy Spirit inspired the men of God to accurately record the history, we need His guidance to understand the the truths in the Bible

John 16:13-15
Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.    14He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall shew it unto you.    15All things that the Father hath are mine: therefore said I, that he shall take of mine, and shall shew it unto you.

When unbelievers read Bible like an historical book, believer's with the help of the Holy Spirit, understand HIS-STORY, the Word of God.
