Jesus the Word purifies us

Daily Devotional

John 15:3
Now ye are clean through the word which I have spoken unto you.

We are witnessing two major natural disasters in the recent history. As I write this, Red Cross calculates that the deaths in Myanmar could cross 127,000. The fatalities from the earthquake in China could rise above 50,000. While we pray for the victims and the families and support them, let us make sure not to fall in to the classic deception of "Why did God do this?" or "maybe God was judging them".

God is not the author of destruction. "Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning." (James 1:17). Yes, there will be another judgment day, but that is after the second-coming of Jesus. This present time is the dispensation of GRACE. God is not one bit angry at the human race. If that were the case, why would God stop with Myanmar and China? I doubt we would have the audacity to think it is because we are "better". At the cross JESUS paid the price for all the sins of complete human race (not just believers) with His blood once and for all.

Jesus is the author of abundant life. He does not "prune" us with sickness or storms. If storms were the will of God, Jesus was acting against God's will when He calmed the storm in Mark 4:35-41. In John 15:3, we see, "Now ye are clean through the word which I have spoken unto you". We are clean, not because we do some religious rituals, but because of His word inside of us. It's His word, His presence, that unmerited and powerful Grace that cleans us – not storms or sickness.
